My Youthful Squirrel is a part of my Whimsical Wildlife series. Depicted is a young red squirrel (Sciurus vulgais) with developing ear tufts. Red squirrels come in a variet of colors outside what their name would suggest. Their coats can range from bright copper red to deeper darker reds and sometimes grey and black! Red squirrels are native to the UK and are fairly widespread across nothern Eurasia. North America does have its own Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) but it does not have the striking ear tufts that its cousin over the great pond has.
